ACADEMIC, POSTDOC and POSTGRADUATE POSITIONS

Research studentships and Postdoc positions are rarely advertised as 'psychedelic' opportunities, but work in this field does exist.

When applying for positions it is important to remember that most of the Institutions will not usually be looking for candidates with a strong psychedelic background. How much stress you place on this in any application to a particular institution must be a matter of very careful judgement. More often than not, it is better to keep quiet about your specific interest until you have established a strong reputation.

Course overview

Course name: PhD Studentship in Metabotropic Glutamate Receptors in cortico-thalamic circuits: cognitive mechanisms
University/institute:
Location: United Kingdom
Start date: 2009-05-15
Fields of interest: PhD Studentship in Metabotropic Glutamate Receptors in cortico-thalamic circuits: cognitive mechanisms

Course details & information

Applications are invited for a four-year BBSRC Industrial CASE Partnership PhD Studentship commencing in October 2009 in collaboration with Schering-Plough Corporation (Newhouse, Scotland). The studentship covers a tax-free stipend (currently £17,440 per annum) in addition to covering tuition fees at the UK/EU rate.

This project aims to understand the function of Metabotropic Glutamate Receptors in cortico-thalamic circuits and their role in cognitive mechanisms. The use of selective ligands for these receptors as tools for understanding neural circuitry will be a major focus. The project will involve in vivo and in vitro neurophysiology and pharmacology. In addition to working at UCL, students will be expected to take up the opportunity of a placement with Schering-Plough during the studentship. We are looking for very motivated candidates with excellent scientific potential.

The UCL Institute of Ophthalmology carries out research in well-equipped laboratories adjacent to Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Trust. The Institute achieved the highest ratings in the last four RAE assessments. Research within the Institute is wide-ranging covering from basic sciences to clinically-related translational study. This is an ideal environment for research training. The PhD student will benefit from state-of-art facilities within the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and UCL School of Life and Medical Sciences. This project will benefit a student who wishes to establish a career in Biomedical Science.

Applicants should hold (or expect to obtain) a minimum upper-second degree or equivalent in an associated subject such as neuroscience, pharmacology, physiology or biological sciences. Previous laboratory-based research experience is desirable.
